The hidden battle of grandparent carers | Helen Collett

The growing number of UK grandparents who, like me, care full-time for children need more support from social services There are many reasons why grandparents might be raising their grandchildren: a relationship breakdown between the child’s parents, illness, addiction or violence. Whatever the reason, it is believed that around 200,000 grandparents in the UK are providing full-time care for their grandchildren. My story started back in 2001.

Letter: Drastic impact of cut to mobility allowance

Amelia Gentleman is to be congratulated for her article ( ‘If this benefit is withdrawn, it will take away my sons’ only enjoyment in life’ , 13 January), in which she draws attention to the drastic impact of the government’s proposal to cut the mobility component of the disability living allowance (DLA) for those in residential care homes. What is perhaps especially concerning is that it appears the prime minister fails to understand what is at stake here with this cut.

The sight of a man allegedly being dragged out of his wheelchair at last week’s protests was shocking to many. Not to Jody McIntyre himself It takes only a minute or so with Jody McIntyre to realise it would take much more than the combined forces of the Metropolitan Police, the Daily Mail and the BBC to keep him down.

Littlejohn has a right to be obnoxious

I see from a story in today’s Independent that the Press Complaints Commission received more than 500 complaints about an article by Richard Littlejohn. This has prompted the PCC to contact Jody McIntyre , a disabled man who claims he was badly treated during the tuition fees protests, to ask whether he wishes to make a formal complaint about Littlejohn’s Daily Mail column
