Being Martin, a short film telling the story of a disabled man’s trek across England on a motorised off-road wheelchair, has been named best short documentary at the Moondance International Film Festival in Colerado.

Martin Symons, 43, has previously crewed a yacht, trekked through the high mountains of Europe and Asia and rafted in the Himalayas. The 10 minute film, directed by Lou Hamilton, shows how Martin was ‘born in 1966 with two rare conditions – Klippel-Feil syndrome and a lust for life.’

The film shows how, with his health deteriorating, Martin pledged to undertake one last challenge, crossing England from west to east along the Hadrian’s Wall cycle route on the Boma, which allowed him to travel at the speed of a cyclist.

He completed the trip last June, travelling from Bowness-on-Solway on the Cumbrian coast to South Shields, raising £4,500 for the aid of the Lane Fox Respiratory Unit Patients’ Association at St Thomas’ Hospital, London.
