Disabled Father’s ‘Walk’ for Injured Grenadier Guards

Darren Heaton
A wheelchair-user aims to complete a 10 day charity ‘walk’ in aid of several military charities.
Darren Heaton, the father of a serving Grenadier Guard, intends to complete the 239 mile trip from Glossop near Manchester to Wellington Barracks in London, starting on 14 September.
He will complete the trip on a brand new Breeze 4 scooter and NuDrive system donated by leading mobility scooter specialist TGA Electric.
“My son, Chris, is a serving Grenadier Guard who has recently returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan,” Darren explained. “While out there he unfortunately lost comrades during engagements with the Taliban and witnessed injuries to close friends. With such a personal connection, this has led me to attempt this journey to raise money for injured British troops, especially the Grenadier Guards who have close links with the four charities I have chosen.
“As a wheelchair user, the challenge ahead is a little daunting however I am determined to complete the journey to show my determination in supporting the UK soldiers who put their lives at risk everyday to make the world a safer place for us all,” he added.

Darren Heaton receives delivery of his Breeze 4 scooter, donated by mobility scooter specialist TGA Electric.
Darren aims to raise funds for The Grenadier Guards Colonel’s Fund, SSAFA Forces Help, St. Dunstans and The Poppy Appeal. Accompanying Darren will be Bertie Bear, the official Mascot of the Grenadier Guards, who regularly travels around the world in association with raising funds for injured servicemen and has recently returned from Afghanistan.
Darren and Bertie’s journey to Wellington Barracks is being made possible by a Breeze 4 mobility scooter from TGA Electric and a Ford C-Max support vehicle supplied by Evans Halshaw, Glossop. Each of the 10 stages down to London is approximately 20 miles, well within range of a single battery charge!
