‘Staying Active for Life’ a programme of free creative and physical activities for Hounslow residents aged 50 plus and experiencing sensory loss is launching on 28 September.

The programme is run by national deafblind charity Sense and funded by the London Borough of Hounslow Council. Participants can join a creative crafts workshop linking sensory art with local history and a friendly yoga and stretching group.

The art project runs for twelve weeks every Monday from 10am-12:30pm at the Edward Pauling House in Feltham. The group will have the chance to share their personal stories and talk about the history of the borough of Hounslow, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Participants will learn new skills and experiment with words, sounds and textures in order to design an interactive quilt of memories for an exhibition after the end of the project.

The yoga and stretching group will meet at Greenham House in Hounslow East, every Monday from 1:30-2:30pm for twelve weeks and members will do some gentle yoga and slight stretching with the specialist support of highly trained teachers and volunteers.

Kara Jarrold, Head of Arts & Wellbeing at Sense, said:

“Sensory loss is quite common in older age and makes it more difficult for people to socialise, exercise and take part in activities that most of us take for granted. We’re extremely grateful to Hounslow Council for supporting us to help older people realise their creative and health aspirations, participate in their local communities and have fun in an accessible environment on a weekly basis.”

If you’d like to join ‘Staying Active for Life’ please contact Kara Jarrold at Sense on 0207 014 9365 / 07780 443 581 or email kara.jarrold@sense.org.uk  It’s absolutely free, carers and helpers are welcome and participants can join in anytime.
