New Website to Help Early Recognition of Dementia
Friday, 12 March 2010 13:18
MemoryProblems_logoA new website aims to increase understanding of the early symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, following research showing that carers and family members have a vital role in spotting the symptoms of dementia and encouraging their relatives to visit a doctor.

The Memory Problems? website includes two short educational films that bring to life some of the symptoms and behaviours that are early indicators of the disease, as well as prompting family members to take early action when they recognise these symptoms.

A recent survey of doctors, carers and the public in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK found that many carers were not aware of all the early signs and symptoms of the disease, leading to an average period of 43 weeks between the recognition of symptoms and the first medical appointment.

Professor Roy Jones of the Research Institute for the Care of Older People Centre in Bath said: “Diagnosing dementia is often difficult, particularly in the early stages, but this is when it is most important. If we can diagnose and start managing Alzheimer’s disease early, we can help patients and their families cope better with the situation.

HFH_dog_tagsA charity aiming to provide injured and disabled veterans with highly trained assistance dogs has launched its inaugural ‘puppies on parade’ appeal to raise the £100,000 needed to purchase, train and support the charity’s first five Hounds for Heroes.

The charity is the long held dream of  Gulf war veteran Allen Parton, who’s partnership with Labrador Endal became the subject of documentaries, an international best-selling memoir and a possible Hollywood movie.

“I was always amazed at the public interest in Endal's and my story but I couldn't except that we were unique and why this sort of thing was not the norm,” he says.

“Endal became the best physical and psychological rehabilitation I could have ever received,” he adds. “He transformed not only my life but that of my family. EJ (Endal junior) has continued to give me the same quality of life and independence that I experienced with Endal and every day our partnership grows stronger. Together there are truly no limits to what we can achieve. I just so wanted other to experience the same.”

Now registered with the charity commission, the team behind Hounds for Heroes have experience of the other assistance dogs organisations. Four serving members of the Armed Forces have come on board as trustees, and the charity has already gained practical support from serving personnel.

Allen, who has been the face of the Royal British legion poppy appeal, , admits that some veterans may view assistance dogs as a badge of disability and weakness. “Hounds for Heroes intends to break this negative image and promote the dogs as badges of ability and honour,” Allen says. “Within the Services there is a very special camaraderie built of trust, loyalty and team work. We hope to replicate that in the partnering of our clients with a Hounds for Heroes. Our dogs jacket will bear the service emblem of the clients regiment, ship or squadron, and any medals awarded will be embroidered on to the dogs jackets.”

Squadron Leader Wayne Palmer is the chairman of the new charity. He said: “I was extremely honoured to be elected to this fantastic charity, where we will be making a difference for our heroes; those men and women of our Armed Forces and Emergency Services who have been disabled. These are our people who routinely put their lives on the line, as part of their duty, and as a nation we should be looking after them.”

New Support Promised For Working Carers
Friday, 12 March 2010 10:35
Adult CarerBusiness, Government and charity leaders have backed better support for employees who balance their jobs with caring for older or disabled people.

Six Government departments will also sign a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ with business forum Employers for Carers, outlining how they will work in partnership to develop and promote support for carers in the workplace. This will include guidance for employers and raising awareness of employees’ right to request flexible working.

The Government stressed the importance of retaining experienced staff in the early stages of economic recovery but recognised that an estimated one in seven workers also have caring responsibilities – a proportion set to rise as the number of people needing care is expected to nearly double in the next 20 years.

Care Services Minister Phil Hope said: “Support like flexible working and short-term emergency leave can help carers stay in work, retaining their experience in the workforce. I hope all employers will recognise the benefits of being carer friendly,” he added.

Caroline Waters, Director of People and Policy for BT Group and Chair of Employers for Carers, explained: “Forward looking employers are already supporting the carers in their workforce to remain in, or return to, employment. But we also need good public services – right across care and support, education and skills – to truly make the choice to work a reality for the UK’s carers. That’s why we welcome the creation and publication today of this unique partnership agreement between employers and government.”
