Capability Scotland Looking for People with Experience of Disability
Tuesday, 09 March 2010 14:15
Capability Scotland LogoDisability charity Capability Scotland is looking for people with experience of disability to join their 1 in 4 Poll. Participants are expected to respond to three or four surveys a year on issues that relate to disability equality.

The 1 in 4 Poll – so-called because one in four households in Scotland lives with disability – was established in 2000.

It’s findings have provided invaluable evidence supporting campaigns and legislation, giving a real voice to the disabled people on the issues impacting their lives – a voice that politicians, the media and the general public have been unable to ignore.

New Proposals To Improve Bus Travel
Tuesday, 09 March 2010 13:27

busBus operators in England which fail to enforce dedicated wheelchair spaces on their vehicles will face financial penalties under new Government proposals to improve bus travel and tackle anti-social behaviour.

The plans – published in a consultation paper – outline a range of measures to improve services including allowing local authorities to set maximum ticket prices for all, or certain categories, of passengers at a level less than the existing commercial fares. The UK Government extended free bus travel for elderly or disabled people to anywhere in England.

Transport Minister Sadiq Khan said: “Two thirds of all public transport journeys are by bus and passengers deserve a better travelling experience. The proposals we are publishing today are a significant step towards making that improvement and ensuring this vital part of our transport system continues to thrive.”

The consultation – ‘Improving Bus Passenger Services through the Regulatory Framework’ – is open until 1 June 2010.

Adam, a member of the Steering Group for the Council for Disabled Children, wants to work as a film editor in the movie industry. “This was an amazing opportunity for me. I really enjoyed learning so many new media skills and getting to go down to London to spend the day at the BBC, working alongside real television professionals. Prudence Wins An Oscar
Monday, 08 March 2010 17:50

Director Roger Ross Williams with PrudenceA short documentary about a disabled woman in Zimbabwe, and her life, has won the Academy Award for Documentary; Short Subject.

The 33 minute documentary, directed by Roger Ross Williams, stars Prudence Mabhena, a talented young woman who has arthrogryphosis, a rare disorder that severely deforms the joints of the body.

Despite overwhelming odds – in parts of Africa disabled people are given a wide berth--and treated as if contagious – Prudence has found a home to thrive in, and an astounding singing talent to share with the world.

Her success is thanks to the King George VI School & Centre for Children with Physical Disabilities (KG6), a largely privately-funded institution enabling disabled children to blossom under the care of director Inez Hussey. Prudence lives there now and also works there as a teacher.

The film, narrated by Prudence herself, was made against the challenging backdrop of Zimbabwe’s open to hostility to foreign journalists.
