Deaf and Blind Youth Service Launched in Leeds
Friday, 05 March 2010 16:32
Youth ServiceLeading deaf and blind charity coHearentVision has launched its new contemporary Youth Service for children and young people in Yorkshire.

Based in Leeds, the coHearentVision Youth Service will provide a one-stop-shop where sensory loss children and young people can find support, advice and activities to enable them to live full and enriching lives.

Barbara Fraher, Youth Development Officer at coHearentVision, said: “The aim of the new Youth Service is to bring to the region a place where like-minded children and young people can meet and hang out together, make new friends and enjoy new activities, whilst parents can find the support they need for coping with sensory loss.

“We work hard to make our service users feel like they belong in society and it’s through the activities and events that we run where people really find out what their talents and interests are, which we then nurture to bring out the best in people.”

The service is being introduced to complement the new contemporary brand that is currently being launched by the charity, reflecting its modernised way of working and to reflect the dynamism of its team.

coHearentVision runs a range of activities for children aged five to 11 and young people aged 12 to 25.

Barbara added, “We run all sorts of activities from parents and toddler groups, to theatre visits, ice skating and football training. There’s always something for everyone, so we’re urging people who have a sensory loss to get in touch and join the fun.”

coHearentVision is the new contemporary working name of the Leeds Society for Deaf and Blind People and reflects the forward thinking and innovative approach of its staff, volunteers and stake-holders.

Paralympian Takes Silver Before Paralympic Winter Games
Friday, 05 March 2010 16:05

Paralympian_RoseBritish alpine skier Sean Rose won silver in the second Downhill race of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Cup Finals in Aspen, USA on March 2, 2010.

The result gives Rose an overall ranking of third in the 2009-2010 World Cup series and indicates that Rose is in excellent form ahead of the Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

Middlesborough-born Rose, who now lives in Cambridgeshire, completed the run in a time of 1:14.11, just under two seconds behind the USA’s Joe Tomkins who took advantage of competing on home snow to finish first.

Rose previously won gold in the Downhill event at the World Cup in Sestriere at the end of January 2010.

Rose will now compete in the Super-G and Super Combined events at the World Cup Finals. A total of 105 athletes from 17 different countries are competing in Aspen until March 5, and the Finals are the last competition of the 2009/2010 IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup season.

ParalympicsGB will send a team of seven skiers and five wheelchair curlers to the Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver. The Games run 12-21 March 2010.

Junior Swimmers Go For Gold
Wednesday, 03 March 2010 12:38

Ellie SimmondsMore than 200 young disabled swimmers will compete this weekend (6-7 March) at the National Junior Swimming Championship, organised by Disability Sport Events (DSE) at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

The annual event is an opportunity for young British swimming talent to compete at a national level, and is a springboard towards international success.

Participants will also have the chance to watch some of the UK's top Paralympic swimmers in action during the weekend, including Sascha Kindred, Gold-medallist Ellie Simmonds MBE and 15 year old Lizzie Simpkin from Southport.

Lizzie said: “Training is getting really tough at the moment, but my coach has given me a target to aim for at the juniors. I’m hoping to better my times from the Worlds last year in Rio. I love competing at the juniors as I always meet someone new and make new friends”.

The event is the latest to be supported by Nationwide Building Society. Their Divisional Director for Corporate Affairs, Maxine Taylor, explained: "We hope our sponsorship will enable more disabled athletes to take part in these events and that they continue to break records, both personally and internationally.”

The Championship is free for spectators, so offers a great opportunity to see the country’s best juniors -- and future Paralympians -- in action.

Jobs Boost for Paralympians
Wednesday, 03 March 2010 09:24
Paralympics logoParalympic athletes will gain official support to get back into the job market following the 2012 London Games, thanks to a link up between ParalympicsGB and world-leading HR experts at Adecco Group UK & Ireland.

The new link-up will mean that disabled elite sportsmen and women will benefit from the International Paralympic Committee Athlete Career Programme (IPC ACP), which helps athletes make the transition from the field of play into the workforce – sometimes after years of full-time training.

Phil Lane, CEO at ParalympicsGB, welcomed Adecco’s extension of the ACP to support Paralympic athletes. He said: “We know that the qualities of dedication, passion and a drive to succeed that make up a Paralympian are the same qualities that are sought after by employers. By signing this agreement we’re pleased that Adecco’s expertise can be accessed by those athletes who want to make the sometimes difficult transition to employment after they retire from their sporting career.”

The IPC ACP consists of two main programmes; the Career Development track is a personalised programme enabling athletes to view their athletic successes and characteristics from the point of view of potential employers, and express them in appropriate terms; the Job Placement is founded on Adecco's world-class job placement expertise and is designed to help athletes best utilise their unique backgrounds and capabilities.

Adecco has also launched its Disability Talent Pool (DTP), a register of talented disabled candidates who are interested in working at London 2012, who can be fast-tracked for roles in the Games.

Come and Try Wheelchair Curling at Braehead
Friday, 26 February 2010 09:48

Curling_teamTeam GB has enjoyed mixed fortunes at the recent Winter Olympics in Canada, but hopes are high for the British participants at the following Paralympic Games, and in particular the Wheelchair Curling team. All the team are members of Braehead Wheelchair Curling Club, near Glasgow, which is opening its facilities to interested members of the public on Friday 5 March.

So, if you fancy your chances for the next Winter Games, why not have a go? The Club is inclusive, friendly, enthusiastic and provides the chance to learn all about the sport – so why come on over? (Woolly jumper optional, but recommended!)

Member Gill Keith said: “Nothing ventured nothing gained. I started curling as a hobby on a Sunday afternoon. Now I have been selected to the performance squad and have travelled to the States and Canada, competed in many events in the UK. That could be you too!”

Join the Club us for a warm welcome at 7.50 pm on the ice; they’ll provide the help and support to try this exciting sport. Then, have a drink in the bar after and chat to lots of curlers and find out what it is all about.
