Lawn Bowls: South Africa defeated England 15-9 and New Zealand beat Scotland 13-9  in the para open triples B6/B7/B8 semi-finals at Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre on Wednesday.

Although this means that New Zealand and South Africa will be battling out for Gold and Silver tomorrow (Thurs) it does leave a ‘juicy auld tie’ between Scotland and England for the Bronze.

Bowlers in this event have a physical disability that can range from an arm amputation to lower limb joint problems, prosthesis or paralysis.

Roger HAGERTY (RSA)

On the win:
“We started off very slowly, very tense, and they got on top of us. In the sixth end, Deon (Deon Van De Vyver, RSA), our lead started finding it (the jack) very tight and their guys didn’t quite match him.”

“Our skip (Derrick Lobban, RSA) was keeping us in the game until the sixth end and once we got on top, it was blow for blow. And then the rain started coming down which affected their two guys, particularly Bob (Bob LoveENG) with his foot delivery which was unfortunate for them and fortunate for us.”

On reaching the gold medal match:
“It’s marvellous and awesome. I would say I’m probably happy to be playing the Kiwis and not Scotland.”

On gold medal match opponent New Zealand, with whom South Africa drew on Tuesday:
“It was 10-10 yesterday in the game with the Kiwis but we had beaten Australia in the morning and our focus wasn’t what it should have been.”
