OBE for Learning Disability Campaigner

Beverley Dawkins OBE
Learning disability campaigner Beverley Dawkins was honoured by the Queen this week, receiving an OBE for her outstanding and ongoing Services to People with Special Needs.
Beverley, who is Mencap’s national officer for profound and multiple learning disabilities, has worked with people with special needs and their families for more than 30 years.
She was a driving force behind the publication of the learning disability charity’s Death by Indifference report in 2007, which brought to light the appalling catalogue of neglect and ignorance that led to the deaths of six people with learning difficulties in NHS hospitals. (more…)
Council Wins National Telecare Award
A Scottish council has scooped the first ever TSA National Crystal Award, which was announced during the National Telecare and Telehealth Conference in December.
Renfrewshire Council – Care 24 was judged the best of 20 entries for an award developed to recognise excellence within the telecare and telehealth industry.
Judged on criteria of benefits for service users, partnership working, creativity, efficiency savings and ‘going the extra mile’, Renfrewshire Council – Care 24 was praised for the delivery of a service that was deemed ‘essential’ by both users and professionals. (more…)
New Grants for Disabled Athletes
Talented young disabled athletes across London and South East England have until 13 February to apply for a share of £400,000 of financial and training grants being offered by the GLL Sport Foundation.
Successful applicants will benefit from either funding of up to £1,500 each to be spent on training, travel and equipment during the next 12 months, or training awards that allow free sporting access to 78 sports facilities managed by not-for-profit leisure operator GLL or its partners. (more…)
Oska Bright Film Festival Calls for Entries

Kids Today by The Cedar Centre, Brighton
The 5th international festival of short films made by people with learning difficulties is inviting submissions for the 2011 festival.
The Oska Bright film festival is looking for films under 10 minutes long. They can be in any genre, from live action or animation to documentary or dance-film. Films can be made by groups or individuals in the UK or abroad; they must have people with learning difficulties in control.
The deadline for entries is Tuesday 30 April 2011 and the Festival takes place over 3 days in November 2011, in Brighton.

Award for Care Home Manager
A group of care homes, specialising in dementia care in the South East and East Anglia, is celebrating a win at the Surrey Care Awards.
Monica Prosser, who is the Care Home Manager at Carebase’s Acorn Court Care Home in Redhill, was awarded Manager of The Year at the ceremony.
Monica’s Manager of the Year award recognizes her outstanding leadership and management skills in developing a service and team that delivers consistently good results for the Acorn Court residents. (more…)
