Winning Amputee Footballers Look to World Cup
The Great Britain Amputee Football team enjoyed an ‘incredible’ 10-0 victory over their French counterparts on 5 June.
Before a capacity crowd, the highly-contested match proved a fitting climax for the Takeda Cup, sponsored by pharmaceutical company Takeda UK, and was an encouraging result in the run up to the 2010 World Amputee Football Federation World Cup in Argentina in October.
Team manager Dave Tweed said: “The team showed what they were made of – and if they play like that in Argentina, we’re in with a real chance of bringing home the World Cup later this year.

Danny Mills and David Beckham celebrate after victory over Argentina in a 2002 World Cup group match
Defender Danny Mills is better known for crunching tackles than his charity work.
But the loss of his son, and an early end to his playing days, have driven the former Leeds, Manchester City and England star in an entirely new direction.
We meet at Wembley – ironic really, given Mills never played here for England. Indeed all of his 19 caps were won away from English football’s iconic home.
But Danny is not here for football, but for a board meeting of a disabled supporters charity. This is his new life.
Wembley Way
He arrives in a wheelchair, hauling himself up Wembley Way. It’s all part of his preparations for this month’s Brighton Marathon, which he will try to complete on wheels to raise money for research into spina bifida.
He has good cause. In 2002, he lost his son Archie to the condition. Danny and his wife were told the diagnosis during the pregnancy.
“When we were first told, we didn’t really know what spina bifida was,” he says. “But then we were told it was so severe, there would be no chance of survival.” (more…)
Sport: British Amputee Footballers Take on France
British amputee footballers will take on the French national team AFFA this June in what promises to be a closely-fought contest for the new Takeda Cup.
The invitation-only game will be part of fundraising efforts by the England Amputee Football Association (EAFA) to support the British squad that will travel to Argentina for the World Cup competition this October.
EAFA creates opportunities at every level for amputees and others with limited use of their limbs to play football, and celebrate the active and fulfilling life amputees can lead.
Kick-off is at 1pm on 5 June at the Nell Rouke Stadium in Stockport, Cheshire. Places are limited and spectators are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment. Admission is free.
