Hyde Park is a place where nature, history, and leisure come together, offering a beautiful escape in the heart of London. For visitors with accessibility needs, the Serpentine Lake provides a welcoming space to enjoy the water, whether through boating or swimming. This summer, The Royal Parks invites everyone to discover the freedom of being out on the water, supported by thoughtful accessibility features that ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Arriving at Hyde Park

The day begins with a gentle journey along Hyde Park’s wide, hard-standing pathways leading to the Serpentine. For those arriving by car, the nearby Serpentine Car Park and Triangle Car Park provide easy access. The morning hours are particularly peaceful, making them ideal for those who prefer a quieter environment, you can even try out a spot of bird watching.

Boating on the Serpentine

A highlight of the day is hiring one of the accessible boats, designed with raised bars to support steady boarding and a secure experience. There is a Crewlift hoist for anyone not able to transfer into the boats independently. Electric pedalos are also available, perfect for those who may find pedalling difficult but still want to glide across the water and take in the beautiful views of the park.

The boat house ensures a smooth start, with a hearing loop system in place and staff ready to assist if queuing is a challenge. Carers are welcome with complimentary tickets, ensuring that visitors have the support they need to fully enjoy the experience.

A Refreshing Dip: The Serpentine Lido

For those eager for a swim, the Serpentine Lido opens from mid-May to September, offering a unique opportunity to bathe in a picturesque outdoor setting. With both deep and shallower waters available, swimmers can choose the setting that suits them best.

Getting a bite to eat and drink

After time spent on the water, a stop at the Serpentine Bar and Kitchen is the perfect way to round off the day. With step-free access, wide doorways, and an accessible bathroom, visitors can enjoy a relaxed meal or a cup of tea overlooking the lake. Across the water, the Serpentine Lido Cafe also offers accessible facilities, including a step-free entrance, an accessible toilet, baby changing areas, and bottle warming stations. Guide dogs and assistance dogs are permitted in catering outlets across the Royal Parks and park kiosks cater for a variety of dietary requirements, all with accessible counter height displays and payment machines.
