A New Vista to Behold
Doreen and Phillip Rushton from Gedling, Nottingham, recently made the exciting decision to change their standard car to a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV). Doreen was so thrilled with the experience that she got in touch to let us know the difference their new Volkswagen Vista, from Allied Mobility, has made to their lives.
Time to upgrade
Doreen’s husband, Phillip, has a rare form of dementia and not long ago he started using a wheelchair full time. Doreen, who herself lives with lung disease found it impossible to lift his wheelchair into the boot of their existing car and realised that something needed to change. Doreen explains: “When Phillip started using a wheelchair, it was such a struggle putting him and the chair into the car. I was worried it would get to the stage where I couldn’t manage this anymore and he wouldn’t be able to travel with me or even leave the house. We’d never had a wheelchair accessible vehicle before so I didn’t know what to expect.”
Plenty of options
Doreen enlisted Allied Mobility’s help to find the right car for her and Phillip. Her local mobility advisor, Richard, talked her through the range of accessible cars and then provided a no-obligation home demonstration of the Volkswagen Vista. Doreen realised that the mobility car suited their needs and she’s thrilled with her choice.
Driving delight

As the driver, Doreen enjoys cruise control, rear parking sensors and an electric winch as standard.
A new lease of life
For Doreen, making the leap to a wheelchair accessible vehicle was a lifechanging moment for the whole family. “The whole experience has given some life back to us. Since taking delivery, Doreen and Phillip have wasted no time putting miles on the clock in their new Vista as Doreen says: “Since we’ve had the car we’ve been travelling all over, making the most of our newfound freedom. We’ve been able to get away on day trips to Skegness and even away to a luxury bungalow for a holiday!”
