The Able Magazine team recently enjoyed a stay in stunning accessible holiday accommodation in the rural village of Hambleton, Lancashire.

These purpose-built self-catering retreats offer luxury for people of all abilities and provide additional aids to suit each individual’s needs. Each cottage houses a discrete ceiling track hoist, spacious wetroom and has open plan level access. Whether you or your loved one require a profiling bed, shower trolley or airflow mattress, nothing is too much trouble for the staff at this family-owned escape (who actually designed the cottages). Furthermore, nine out of the 12 cottages have an accessible hot tub, so everyone can take a soak under the stars; though perhaps not recommended in midwinter!

The cottages, vary in size, sleeping 2-12 people and surround the most tranquil lake, attracting diverse wildlife and brimming with fish, as we discovered during a crisp lakeside afternoon.

Accessible
Continuing to develop their offering, they’ve recently added the accessible Lakeside Bistro, hydrotherapy pool and Changing Place, which are all open to the public as well as guests.

The Bistro serves a great variety of home-cooked meals catering for vegan, gluten free and dairy free diets. Again though, it’s the small details that we were impressed with; the Bistro team use ‘elephant feet’ to raise table heights, blend any food on request and provide appropriate cutlery and crockery as required, all with an easy smile. From the Bistro you can take the lift up to their beautiful function suite, ideal for celebrations, meetings or even craft classes, not to mention a wonderful, elevated view over the lake.

The hydropool is another inclusive treat, with easy access either by steps or hoist, using a sling or hard seat. The H System hoist above the pool discretely allows users to be transferred from a shower chair or shower trolley in either changing room directly through to the pool. Families and groups can tailor therapeutic time by selecting the music, or colour of the starlight ceiling and other lighting to suit.

Location
The location is also really handy, being nestled within 12 acres of rural Wyre countryside yet in easy reach of Lytham St Annes, Fleetwood, Cleveleys and Blackpool, where, of course, you can enjoy the famed razzmatazz of shows and concerts, together with the famous illuminations and tower. Further afield, the Lake District, Liverpool and Manchester are all within an hour’s drive.
