Following 2012, one of the most prolific years of British sports, Disability Sports Coach (DSC) has started the process of creating a lasting legacy, in providing a disability sports community club structure throughout London. DSC Community Clubs will provide opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in sport and physical activity at all levels in partnership with numerous London Boroughs.
Disability Sports Coach, a registered charity, provides high quality sporting opportunities for people with disabilities throughout the UK. To achieve this goal they deliver coaching, training, events, and DSC Community Clubs to mainstream schools, special schools, clubs, charities & other professional organisations. Since DSC’s conception, they have supported and delivered to over 60,000 people with a variety of impairments. They have also worked with over 130 different organisations including National Governing Bodies, Local Authorities, community groups and schools, all of which will be keen to hear about their latest project, the DSC Community Clubs.
DSC Community Clubs
The purpose of the Community Clubs is to provide access to exciting, enjoyable, active and safe, two-hour sporting sessions on a weekly basis for people with any disability aged 11-25. DSC currently has Community Clubs set to start this September in Wandsworth, Southwark, Westminster and Islington all being delivered by a team of experienced coaches.
Camberwell Leisure Centre will play host to Club Southwark due to start on the 14th September 2013. Club Wandsworth will be held at Battersea Sports Centre starting on the 17th September 2013, and the 19th September will see Club Westminster begin their activities at the Little Venice Sports Centre.
This opportunity allows young adults to experience Paralympic and multi-sports including athletics, archery, fencing, sitting volleyball, goalball, judo and many more. The sports kick-starting the Community Clubs off will be boccia, sitting volleyball and football with racket sports planned for the following winter months.
At the end of each segment of sports, all clubs will undertake competitions against each other, in a ‘Battle of the Boroughs’ theme. These competitions will not only be filled with enthused athletes but representatives from National Governing Bodies (NGB’s) from various sports to talent scout for any future stars in the making.
