The Freuds Heroes Index for 2014 has been topped by three disabled people.
From Able Magazine #110 (March/April 2014)
Paralympic swimmer, Ellie Simmonds came third, with Professor Stephen Hawking second behind Falklands War veteran, Simon Weston first. The nationwide research conducted by the strategic marketing and communications consultancy, Freuds, was undertaken to better understand heroism in modern Britain. More than 4,000 people were polled and asked to identify their heroes across the worlds of sport, entertainment and politics.
Able spoke with Simon Weston to congratulate him and gain his perspective on what the poll tells us about changes in the public’s attitude towards disabled people.
“I was quite surprised that the top three people were disabled and all had different types of disability, me because of incident, Stephen Hawking because of disease and Ellie Simmonds because of genetics. I suppose that’s possibly because people look at the three of us in different lights and say, well I hope that we could deal with it in the same way that they’ve done.”
