Redruth based manufacturer DM Orthotics have come to the aide of Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenger Kelda Wood as she attempts to become the first ever adaptive person to solo row the Atlantic.

DM Orthotics design and manufacture dynamic movement orthoses for both children and adults and come in such forms as: the dmo sock, the dmo suit, the dmo glove and the dmo shorts. Kelda wears the dmo shorts, or ‘pink super pants’ as she calls them, and said:

“The proprioceptive feedback from the shorts helps to realign the muscles that are working in an unlevel way as a result of my wonky leg! This is helping to retrain and strengthen muscles that weren’t working in the correct way. This will help to give me the best chance of success next year…..and will hopefully help delay the point when everything starts to hurt!! :-)”.

When she’s not training to row the Atlantic Kelda also runs Climbing Out, a charity she founded that uses outdoor activities to rebuild the confidence and self-esteem in young people who have experienced or are facing life-changing injury, illness or trauma.

Neil Hinde is one of the Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist’s at DM Orthotics and has been working closely with Kelda, he said:

“We were asked to help support Kelda by Blatchfords Orthotics as they had identified a DMO would benefit Kelda with the use of their Momentum brace. Kelda was struggling with postural asymmetry due to weakness and a loss of awareness of body position. As soon as both orthoses were fitted her posture was improved although it has taken some hard work for this to feel normal for Kelda. She now calls the DMO shorts her pink super pants!”

As the majority of DM Orthotics orthoses are made-to-measure it means that CADCAM design and traditional tailoring can be combined for a bespoke offering allowing for Kelda to experience neuro-sensory benefits and an increased range of function and movement.
