The Dorset Destroyers Wheelchair Rugby Club played host to Help for Heroes Endeavour at Rossmore Leisure Centre in Poole, as the Destroyers final warm-up Friendly to the Division One Title Fight in September.

The Dorset Destroyers remain the only unbeaten Wheelchair Rugby 5’s Club in the country and have been top of the League since the start of the season.

In previous encounters the Destroyers have been beaten at 75% of the matches against H4H Endeavour, but this time in all 3 matches played on the day they won.

I asked Sue Coombs Coach, Club Secretary and Co-Founder what do they put it all down to? “It’s hard work in every training session, even when it’s 30 Degrees. Players play for each other and really enjoy the sport.”

I asked “What’s changed to make you unbeaten in the past year?” Paul Sutherland Player and Co-Founder replied “We feel like we’re all in it together, and we want to keep improving every time we play, whether training, a friendly or League. We enjoy a good laugh and a good social side to the club.”

Nick Coombs said “We play a friendly about once a month. Sometimes we try and bring in 2 teams so we have a triple header of matches. It’s about ironing out our errors, seeing what else we can bring to the table and enjoying yourself. With 2 coaches we get 2 ways that they see things, so it means we can really up our game.”

So what do you think of your chances for the Title Fight? Craig Beasley Club Captain “We’ve done well so far, but we are not underestimating the other clubs, we have to keep a cool head, work even harder and dig deeper than we’ve ever done before. It’s a great learning curve.”

The Dorset Destroyers Wheelchair Rugby Club head to Stoke Mandeville Stadium on Sunday September 2nd to fight for the Title of Division One Champions in Wheelchair Rugby 5’s.

Free entry on the day and there will be 10 teams playing, so there’s always a match to watch.
