A new scheme, based on the Motability model has been announced, with one key difference…

The new company, called Equinability, replaces motor vehicles which it says are bad for the environment and lack personality, with horses, ponies and donkeys. The scheme is currently in its developmental stages but has around 100 different equine varieties for customers to choose from.

Just as with its motoring equivalent – Equinability has brought together an excellent package of benefits for disabled people that will swap part of their mobility allowance to lease the animals. The package allows leaseholders to ride the animal for a set number of miles every week (monitored by a horsey pedometer that counts steps). Since Equinability aims to be an ethical service provider, its animals are limited to 20 miles per week; handy for short errands but perhaps not appropriate for serious travellers. Other benefits include free veterinary care, a saddle and a generous hay allowance as well as access to a helpline providing advice on general equine care.

CEO of Equinability, Henry Fetlock says: “Other organisations have proved that riding horses can have lots of benefits for disabled people. Our new equine leasing scheme is designed to help disabled people remain mobile while helping to cut down on environmental nasties from motorised vehicles. These are the ultimate assistance animals!”

Equinability animals are given a serial number at birth with leaseholders allowed to rename them for the period of their lease. They are also able to use any amount of manure produced by their animal, for gardening purposes.
