Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and Minister for Equalities, Sajid Javid MP.

I’m delighted that Glasgow is offering more para-sport medal events than any previous Commonwealth Games. Para-sport has arguably never been stronger in Britain, which is a testament to years of hard work by both the competitors and supporters of disability sport. Their efforts have already enthused people around the world, we only need look at London 2012! This can only happen with support and it’s fantastic that £71 million of public funding is being invested in elite para-sport in the four years to 2016 through UK Sport.

I know all the para-sport competitors will get a fantastic reception at Glasgow 2014. They will inspire many by showing there are no limits to what they can achieve as world-class athletes.

We are ensuring there is strong support for disability sport at the grass roots too. Sport England is working tirelessly with governing bodies to improve opportunities and facilities to encourage more disabled people to get involved in sport.

I wish all para-sport competitors at Glasgow 2014 the best of luck and I know it will be a great event with a lasting legacy for disability sport.
