Surewise has collaborated with Nottingham Trent University on mobility scooter safety, providing free safety packs nationally for mobility scooter users.

Surewise launched its Safer Mobility Campaign earlier this year to address the alarming statistic that mobility scooter users are more than twice as likely to be killed in a road crash than other road users. Tragically, the figures show that over the last decade, mobility scooter casualties have increased by an average of 20% year-on-year.

To enhance the campaign’s reach, Surewise director, Richard Hannan, has partnered with Nottingham Trent University’s (NTU) head of psychology, Dr Duncan Guest. This partnership was formed through their shared interest in improving mobility scooter safety. Dr Guest’s research at NTU has focused on the daily hazards faced by mobility scooter users, resulting in the production of a training video called ‘See and Scoot’.

The pair introduced this collaboration by hosting a webinar for Road Safety GB members, discussing mobility scooter safety issues and proposing new strategies for UK road safety teams. Hannan and Guest will continue their joint efforts at the National Road Safety Conference 2024, later this year in Birmingham.

Richard Hannan says: “We are looking forward to continuing our work with Dr Guest to improve mobility scooter users’ safety. We aim to combine our resources to educate all road users about the risks facing mobility scooter users, who are particularly vulnerable if they are involved in a crash. Our united aim is to reduce the number of crashes and ultimately the casualties they can cause.”
