The National Theatre presents an eclectic mix of new plays and classis from the world repertoire, with seven or eight productions in repertory at any one time. We aim to be accessible and welcoming to all and we are committed to making your visit as easy and enjoyable as possible.

The National Theatre is changing, as part of an £80million redevelopment called NT Future. Call the Box Office ahead of your visit for the latest information on access to the building, drop-off points and car park access.

You can find out more about Access at the National Theatre here.

Our Access Facilities include:

  • Captioned performances for Deaf, deafened and hard-of-hearing people.
A block of seats are reserved to ensure a good view of the caption box or boxes. The NT can also accommodate hearing dogs for the deaf and offer hearing enhancements and headsets for productions in their three theatres on the South Bank. Click here for a list of forthcoming captioned performances.
  • Audio-Described performances for blind or visually impaired people.
Audio description is a live commentary, by trained describers, interspersed with the actors’ dialogue. There is also a ‘programme notes’ description, starting 15 minutes before the production, that helps to capture the atmosphere, costumes, characters and action before and during the course of a performance. Description is relayed via a discreet headset linked to the infra-red audio system. Click here for a list of forthcoming audio described performances.
  • Touch Tours for blind and visually impaired people offer an opportunity to visit the stage, handle props and meet members of the company.
  • Relaxed Performances, which are specifically designed to welcome people with an Autism Spectrum Condition, sensory or communication disorders, learning disabilities or families with young children. There is a relaxed attitude to noise and movement and some small changes made to the light and sound effects.  An easy way to understand the atmosphere is perhaps, ‘the opposite of the quiet carriage on the train’. ‘Visual stories’, which give information about the theatre and the show, will be provided at all bookers to help support your visit. Click here for information about the next Relaxed Performance.
  • Braille and Large Print cast lists for all productions.
  • Infra-red audio head sets and personal neck loops are available.
  • Contego wireless audio amplification is available for partially hearing people for Backstage Tours.
  • Free parking in the NT car park for Blue Badge holders attending a performance at the National.

The NT offers Disabled concession tickets for performances at the National Theatre. If you, or someone for whom you are booking tickets, qualify for the Disabled concession rate, you will need to sign-up to the Access List in order to make bookings at this rate, whether you prefer to book online, by telephone or in person.
