There was a time when the idea of having a lift in your home was reserved for the very wealthy, requiring the construction of a dedicated lift shaft and plenty of space for the lift.
The benefits of such a lift are self-evident! A passenger lift is arguably safer to use and more comfortable to travel in than a stair lift, can have multiple people use it at once, and can carry other objects (your shopping, or luggage, for example) up and down the stairs for you.
Is it possible to benefit from the functionality of these passenger lifts, but with the minimal impact on your home, and for considerably less cost Although it sounds impossible, that is the problem that the Wessex Lift Company set about reconciling over 40 years ago, in 1976.
Wessex began offering its solution, the “Through-Floor Lift”, in the mid 70’s. Initially designed to accommodate wheelchair users, it became apparent that these lifts could be made useful to anyone wanting to make their journey between floors easier.
The design of these lifts is simple; a hole in the ceiling is cut, tracks are fitted going through the hole, and the lift simply travels upstairs and downstairs on those tracks!
When being fitted, a through-floor lift creates as little disruption as having a stair lift installed. But unlike a stair lift your stairway is kept free of any obstruction!
If you want to move home, and have a passenger lift, the idea of taking it with you would be costly and impractical. But with a through-floor lift, it’s a simple process where the lift can be removed, the floor filled in, and the lift reinstated in a new location. You might consider leaving the lift behind though, as a through-floor lift can increase the value of your property.
The through-floor lift aims to, and succeeds in taking the best elements of the stair lift and the passenger lift to create a lift perfectly suited to the domestic environment. Requiring only a fraction of the space a passenger lift needs yet providing the same functionality is just one example. Its functional design makes it far more affordable than a passenger lift, and more comfortable than a stair lift.
The affordability of our through-floor lift is not reflected in the quality. We design and manufacture all of our lifts at our headquarters in Romsey, Hampshire, to ensure consistent high quality. Wessex comply to UK and international standards of safety. We’re proud to say that we have helped shape the industry and, in many areas, our lifts exceed standard safety requirements.
In addition to through-floor lifts, Wessex also design, manufacture, install, and maintain a wide range of vertical platform lifts, that can be installed indoors and outdoors, and some are designed to expand on the functionality of a throughfloor lift (with our largest lift travelling up to 6 metres and having multiple stops in multiple directions).
