We’re a unique service, providing information and advice about organisations, groups and clubs who offer support regarding all disabilities and to all age groups, with needs varying from physical disability, mobility and pain management, through to mental illness and loneliness.
The Big Disability Group direct people that need help towards support groups, enabling them to engage with the community and creating overall positive change in people’s lives.
Founder, Kevin Crawford, identified a gap in communications between local groups, professional bodies and the community, particularly relating to how disabled people engage with activities and services. As a disabled person himself, he initially struggled to find out what services and support were available and only through discussions with people in similar situations found he was not alone. He was inspired to set up The Big Disability Group in 2017.
The Big Disability Group now has a board of directors and volunteers involved in running weekly information stalls, including a former social worker and occupational therapist, as well as people with lived experience of disability and long term health conditions.
Through showcasing a calendar of events on social media and our newsletters, directing calls to our office and presenting regular information stalls, we provide advice and signpost people looking for information about support groups and activities that will assist them. This includes our annual ‘Big Disability Open Day’ that gathers organisations, groups, clubs and charities together, all with the aim of creating a better understanding of the available support.
We continually review our data to ensure that we’re fully up to date with information on organisations and are thorough in our research, ensuring that individuals are directed to the most appropriate level of group support, offering a more tailored advice service to the people who contact us.
While we are based in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, we do not operate exclusively in the local area but engage with groups and individuals from across Scotland.
Everything the group does is related to our goal of providing long term relief to disabled people in reducing their isolation, increasing their sociability and contributing to their wellbeing.
