Following the success of last year’s Superhero Series, npower is once again supporting the only sports series dedicated to the UK’s 13.3 million people with disabilities and long-term injuries. The energy supplier is announcing the launch of an innovative new service, the ‘npower support squad’, to enable even more families to participate in the inspirational Superhero Tri at Dorney Lake on 18th August, 2018.
Team npower at Superhero Tri 2017
It's big. It's bold. It's gutsy. The Superhero Series is the UK’s only parasport series for the everyday superhero! Our resident superheroes Jonnie Peacock and his teammates Matt & Amy were there to fly the flag for #teamnpower (and by the looks of things had a lot of fun along the way)!

A recent study indicated that disabled people are twice as likely to be physically inactive (43 per cent) as non-disabled people (21 percent) due to a lack of confidence or access to specialist equipment.
Over 1,700 participants enjoyed the 2017 Superhero Tri, cheered on by 7,000 spectators. This year, npower wants to help give families even more confidence to enter the swim section and will provide support rafts and volunteers to encourage families to complete the swim and enjoy the rewarding experience.
Heading up the npower support squad will be Olympian, Professor Greg Whyte OBE, as well as volunteers from the Marlow Open Water Swim club. Superhero Tri participants will be led by the expert advice of Professor Greg, who has recently coached David Walliams to swim the English Channel and River Thames, as well as helping Eddie Izzard, Davina McCall and Zoe Ball to conquer Sport Relief challenges.
In addition to providing assistance in the water, the npower support squad will be fully involved on land, from leading participants in the warm-up to cheering them across the finish line.
Sophia Warner, Paralympian and founder of the Superhero Series, said: “The Superhero Series was set up to give participants of all ages and abilities the freedom to walk, run, push, be pushed, or anything between and complete the Tri around the spectacular Dorney Lake. It’s fantastic that npower has taken the time to understand this and has come up with a fun and powerful way to further support families by providing rafts and a support squad. It’s perfect!
“Participants will have so much fun taking part in the open water swim. I hope it also gives them a boost of confidence from accomplishing it and that next year they come back and try to swim even further. I would encourage anyone who is interested in taking up this option to contact me on 01306 627301 or hello@superheroseries.co.uk.”
Ed Madden, npower’s Head of Marketing added: “npower are proud to extend our partnership with the Superhero Series for a second year and are pleased to be able to offer additional support to enable more families to enjoy this fantastic event.
“We saw during our partnership with Team England at this year’s Commonwealth Games how important support can be to athletes. We’re keen to bring this power of support to everyone taking part in the Superhero Tri and hope our npower rafts and support squad will give participants a real boost along the route. We’re looking forward to giving them a Superhero welcome as they cross the finish line.”
Over 2,000 participants have already signed up to tackle the swim, bike and push/run at Dorney Lake on 18 August and it’s not too late to enter.
About Superhero Series
Superhero Series is the only mass-participation sports series dedicated to the UK’s 13.3 million people with disabilities, plus their friends, family and colleagues – it is the sport event for the everyday Superhero.
Founded by Paralympian Sophia Warner, who has been involved in disability sport for 25 years, the third event in the series will be on Saturday 18th August, 2018 at Dorney Lake, Windsor.
Superhero Series gives everyone, from total beginners through to elite athletes, the chance to find their inner super power and achieve an inspirational goal. Participants can be as competitive as they like but the priority is on having fun.

The Series will feature a number of events, including:
- Mass-participation triathlons and triathlon relays over three distances (Sprint, Half and Full) – friends and family without disabilities can participate in the relay provided one relay member has a disability
- Sidekick Tri – a unique triathlon where those with disabilities can receive additional support from their Sidekick, particularly towing them round the swim and pushing around the push/ run stages
- Celebrity Superhero Tri with Team Captains recruiting team mates to join them on a triathlon relay team
- It is supported by 27 Celebrity Team Captains, including: Adam Hills, Anne Dickins, JJ Chalmers, David Weir, Freya Levy and Susie Rodgers
Three ways to take part:
- Team up – do 1 stage each. Unite with family & friends (disabled and non-disabled) to share the work & the fun.
- Grab a Sidekick – This is a unique chance for a Sidekick (a Superhero helper) to tow a friend or loved one in the water and push or pull them around the bike & push/run stages.
- Fly solo – for those who want to take on all three triathlon stages. Everyone entering a solo event must consider themselves to have a disability.
