Specialist disability insurer Fish Insurance has been named as insurance partner for an innovative active powered wheelchair that harnesses Segway technology.
Genny Mobility, winner of the Naidex Able Magazine Best In Show Award this year, was the brainchild of Italian businessman Paolo Badano, who had been searching for an alternative to traditional wheelchairs, following his road accident twenty years ago.
In 2009, the Segway was launched and Paolo decided to use the technology for a groundbreaking new design in wheelchairs. He looked to morph the capabilities of a Segway into the world’s first two-wheeled self-balancing chair called the Genny Urban Deluxe.
The chair is now sold in more than 10 countries and in the UK alone Genny Mobility UK will sell approximately 150 chairs a year which start at £12,995.
As part of the partnership with Fish Insurance, which offers specialist policies for mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs, all new chairs sold will come with the first year’s insurance included. Fish Insurance will also be offering its existing customers access to exclusive discounts on all Genny chairs.
John Garrard, managing director at Fish Insurance, said: “Genny Mobility is a truly ground-breaking product. The new self-balancing chairs have been receiving industry plaudits as it exploits the Segway technology to give users greater mobility. It also has an ability to handle changes in terrain and can deal with most obstacles that traditional wheelchairs users find a barrier.
“It’s naturally something we’re proud to be associated with as the Genny brand wants to empower its chair users and hopes to introduce a new transportation philosophy for personal mobility.”
Andy Larkam, co-owner at GennyMobility UK added: “Genny has quite literally transformed the lives of many people in the UK, the joy it brings is unparalleled and the relationship with Fish Insurance will only add to its benefits.”
Genny Mobility currently retails two models, the Genny Urban Deluxe and the Genny XR which can cope with much tougher terrain than its urban model, such as soft sand beaches and deep mud. GennyMobility UK has a showroom in Dartford, Kent, and a network of dealers throughout the UK. It’s now available through a hire purchase scheme, which makes owning a Genny more affordable. Both models come with a two-year warranty, two year servicing and one year’s Fish Insurance as standard.
