Sport England and UK Sport are keen to engage a new cohort of potential non-executive directors with the ambition, commitment and transferable skills to contribute to the sport industry by joining the Board of one of our funded partners. We believe that the right combination of knowledge, experience and diversity in leadership positions will lead to better performance and a stronger sport sector.

Together we have started to increase the diversity of leadership across our partners as a critical way of hearing from and reaching the different people we wish to engage. This recognises the value that is gained from employing people with different experiences and perspectives. The evidence is clear that diversity better equips organisations and contributes to decision-making. It ultimately benefits the customers we serve and who are competing in the market.

Annual audits on the diversity profile of the Boards of national governing bodies of sport (NGBs) and other sports bodies show that there is nonetheless still a significant lack of diversity. In order to tackle this challenge, we are working alongside executive search firm Perrett Laver and selected partners on the identification, engagement and development of at least 160 diverse “Board Ready” candidates.

The aim is to engage and secure the interest and commitment of a much wider talent pool, and to network in a new cohort of great potential non-executive directors to the sector. Support will be available for those that would welcome this through development and training opportunities. Our funded partners will then be able to advertise upcoming board vacancies to the successful cohort of candidates. Perrett Laver and the consortium of partners will work closely with our funded organisations and potential board candidates to provide networking and deployment support.

During this time, we will continue to work with sports bodies on their diversity action plans and other interventions to ensure an inclusive environment, such that organisations can truly capitalise on the multiple benefits diversity at board level offers.

Partners in this campaign include the Sport and Recreation Alliance, Birkbeck University, Women on Boards, Rimjhim Consulting, Stonewall, and the Activity Alliance.

We welcome applications from people who identify as having any impairment, disability or long-term health condition; from all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds; from all faiths and beliefs; from every part of the country; who identify as any sexuality and/or gender; and regardless of age or marital status. We also seek people with a range of experiences and skills. Experience of working in sport is by no means essential, though passion, enthusiasm and a desire to make a difference in the industry is.

Given the charitable status of many sports boards, non-executive positions are unlikely to be remunerated but travel expenses may be reimbursed.
