Nigeria took gold and silver as Loveline Obiji (NGR) set a new world record with the competition’s final lift to win the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games women’s heavyweight (from 61.1kg) powerlifting at the Clyde Auditorium this morning (Sat).
The 23-year-old beat Egyptian Randa Mahmoud‘s (EGY) mark of 143kg set in the up to 86kg category at the world championships in Dubai this year, lifting 144kg before getting down from the bench and kissing the platform.
Nigeria is still the only country to have won gold in women’s Commonwealth Games powerlifting, following Esther Oyema‘s (NGR) lightweight win earlier and a clean sweep of the podium at Delhi 2010.
Bose Omolayo (NGR) took silver, but saw her final lift of 132kg ruled out on technique after it appeared she had broken the world record of 129kg set by Lin Tzu-Hui (TPE) of Chinese Taipei in the up to 79kg category in Dubai.
Kenya got its first Commonwealth Games powerlifting medal for either women or men as Joyce Wambui Njuguna (KEN) finished ahead of Australia’s Jessica Gray (AUS).
Rather than being based purely on a heaviest lift, the scores were worked out using the AH formula that takes bodyweight into account.
Obiji finished with 122.4 points, Omolayo with 113.4 and Njuguna 68.6.
