According to the World Health Organisation, about 15% of the world’s population, more than a billion people, live with some form of disability. That means nearly one in six people face a multitude of challenges daily, including filling up their cars.

That’s why, in 2017, Shell partnered with fuelService, the app that allows drivers with any disability that makes refuelling difficult to alert petrol stations of their arrival in advance so they can be helped to refuel when they get there. Payment is easy too, with Pay at Pump mobile payment available via the Shell app that allows users to pay quickly and easily without having to leave their car.

How does it work?

Once you download the fuelService app (either via the Apple App Store or Google Play Store), you can use your location to search for nearby service stations, or, alternatively, use Shell Station Locator to see which sites offer this service. Over 900 of our more than 1,000 sites in the UK are now signed up.

You then select the ‘ask for assistance’ button on the app which will automatically contact the station for you. If the request is accepted, you can then alert the station, via the app, to say you have arrived and notify them of which pump you are parked at. The station will then acknowledge your arrival and let you know how long it will be before you receive assistance.

If you don’t have a smartphone, not to worry, as you can still use fuelService by dialling or sending a SMS TXT message. Look out for the posters on the pump at Shell service stations which will give you the number to call.

After filling up, drivers can pay via card or cash, or alternatively use the Shell mobile payment option, Pay at Pump, via the Shell app. The Shell app works in line with fuelService and allows customers to pay quickly and easily directly from within their car. All you have to do is download the Shell app and sign up to Shell Go+ and then from the fuelService app click ‘Pay at Pump’. By using Pay at Pump via the Shell app, users can also earn rewards through the Shell Go+ rewards programme, where after every 10 visits* you get money off fuel!

At Shell, we recognise the importance of both accessibility and mobility. The fuelService and Shell partnership is currently live in the UK, Netherlands, Germany, Canada, Belgium, France, USA and Luxembourg. We have a commitment to make our mobility services inclusive and accessible to customers with disabilities across Shell’s global network of around 46,000 service stations by 2030, starting with a commitment of 20,000 service stations by 2025. This includes continuing to expand our fuelService partnership.
