The Moat House is unusual. Disability-friendly accommodation is rarely described as historic, but in this case, a Georgian period building has been uniquely adapted into a spacious holiday home with outstanding facilities – while also maintaining an uncompromised luxurious look and feel.

Designed and built with disabled people in mind, whether you have reduced mobility, difficulty managing stairs, need assistance with everyday tasks, are a wheelchair user or have complex care needs – The Moat House is uniquely equipped to make your stay so much easier.

The Moat House is the ideal base from which to explore Annan and the surrounding area – famed for its association with Robert ‘Rabbie’ Burns, the famous Scots poet who was once an excise man there. It’s a short stroll into the charming town or a bit further to the coast or inland on the Annandale Way.

Welcoming

Despite its vintage, there’s level access around almost the entire premises as well as floors designed to be suitable for all wheelchair users. The ground floor incorporates a spacious, welcoming reception hall with seating and enough space for parking/charging powerchairs or mobility scooters as well as an impressive farmhouse kitchen dining room. The kitchen has many wheelchair accessible facilities, including rise and fall sink, hob and work surfaces.

Accommodation is situated on two floors, which are linked by a lift and there are a range of differently accessible bedrooms incorporating features like profiling beds and ceiling track hoists.

The wetroom style downstairs bathroom features a raised seat Clos’o’mat toilet with support rails, rise and fall shower/ changing bench, ceiling track hoist, shower commode chairs for adults and children, as well as level access shower and lowered basin with grab rails. The upstairs bathroom is equally well appointed and features a luxury roll-top bath which is accessible by mobile hoist or bath lift.

Outside, you’ll find a fully accessible, multilevel courtyard style garden area with colour differentiated ramped/level area patios (to aid visually impaired guests) with shrubs and flowers galore, a sensory garden, gazebo covered barbecue dining area, artificial turf play area, benches and other outdoor furniture and access to the motte and bailey castle grounds, sports fields and river Annan beyond.
