The BBC is currently leading a month-long season of films exploring the lives of young disabled people.

I was very pleased to be invited to get involved and interviewed by Peter Mitchell for his programme ‘Disabled in an Instant’. It was a wide ranging interview which covered a number of topics close to my heart, including tackling disability hate crime.

The case for eradicating this scourge is made eloquently and clearly by Adam Pearson. His BBC 3 programme aired on 27th July, ‘The Ugly Face of Disability Hate Crime’, made uncomfortable viewing and reconfirms my desire to work with colleagues across Government to make a difference on this topic.

While it is now much easier to report disability hate crime, we all need to do much more. I’ve invited Adam to meet with me to discuss what more this government can do to help. Disability hate crime is the worst sort of prejudice and we need to stamp it out.

This is my first online article for Able Magazine and I want to use this platform to talk about the real issues that affect disabled people. If any readers have a specific topic that they want to hear about then please feel free to contact the magazine – or me directly via Twitter – with your suggestion.
